The Antikythera mechanism is a 2,100-year-old analog computer. Recovered from an ancient shipwreck in the Mediterranean northwest of Crete, it consists of at least thirty gears, a level of complexity unique for its time. It would have calculated the positions of astronomical bodies on a given date, as well as possibly other functions related to calendars and time-keeping.
